I confess

I Confess is a film directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1953.

Synopsis[]

Set in Quebec, a Catholic priest hears the confession of a murderer. Bound by his vows of silence, the priest is powerless to speak of what he knows, even when he himself becomes a suspect.

Cast[]

  • Montgomery Clift as Father Logan
  • Anne Baxter as Ruth
  • Karl Malden
  • Brian Aherne
  • Dolly Haas

Background Information[]

  • Filmed on location in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.
  • Features the first Canadian lead characters since The 39 Steps a decade earlier.
  • Anne Baxter had previously auditioned for the lead role in Rebecca when she was only sixteen years old. She came very close to being cast before it was decided that she was too young.
  • Dolly Haas had retired from acting. She was a personal friend of the Hitchcocks and did the role as a favor to them.

Script Development[]

Several proposed storylines were dropped for this film, among them the idea of Logan having fathered a child with Ruth before he entered the priesthood, and Keller killing Logan at the film's conclusion.
